Who by Fire:
One of the most iconic piyyutim or liturgical poems on the High Holidays is the Unetaneh Tokef. It imagines God sitting before ledgers inscribed with our actions and deciding who will be inscribed in the Book of Life for the coming year. It is a haunting and awe-inspiring vision. We chant that on Rosh Hashana it is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed.
Leonard Cohen wrote a beautiful and inspiring interpretation of the piece entitled, “Who By Fire.” I encourage you to have a listen to set the mood for Yom Kippur.
Wishing everyone a meaningful fast and may we all be inscribed in the Book of Life for the year to come for health and happiness.
