USY at Midbar Kodesh Temple helps the Las Vegas Rescue Mission and more

Midbar Kodesh Temple USYers' Spring Social Action Tikkun Olam (SATO) projects had the teens again busy shopping, sorting and packing up their "Go Live" bins and brown bag lunches for delivery to the Step Up and the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.

Step Up, a program of the Clark County Social Services, provides guidance to students aging out of the Clark County foster care program, helping them to transition from foster care to economic self-sufficiency by providing them with goods and services including case management, housing, employment, education, transportation and other services. For several years MKT USY has provided bins of new household goods to help the Step Up teens get a good start in their new homes.

USYers also prepared and packed up over 100 lunches for delivery to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission which serves as a beacon of hope for people in need. In 1970 the mission began as a shelter that included a kitchen and chapel that housed only a few men. Today the mission has grown into a campus that fills almost two city blocks and is able to feed, shelter and serve hundreds of men, women and children and contacts the appropriate agencies for counseling and medical attention beyond the scope of the Mission's capabilities. The Rescue Mission is privately funded.

Midbar Kodesh Temple USYers are teens 7th through 12th grade who meet together twice monthly for lounge nights and social activities. Leadership training, religious education, Israel connections, SATO and just for fun activities are on the agenda. The teens also have the opportunity to travel to synagogues in their 5 state region and have spend Shabbat in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson and at Camp Ramah-Ojai and Camp Alonim.
